What Is AEO? Where to Add Answer Blocks on a Page

A Note From The Build Floor

Where exactly on a page answer blocks should be placed for maximum extraction likelihood — the specific positioning guidance.

As the founder of Perceptra, a Mumbai digital growth studio, I work with real businesses on these challenges every week. This guide is written for owners and decision-makers, not engineers.

Why placement matters as much as the answer content itself

An answer block's position on the page directly affects Google's confidence in associating it with the matching heading — placing the answer immediately following its corresponding question-based heading, with no significant content in between, maximises this association confidence, while burying the same answer several paragraphs deeper undermines extraction likelihood even if the answer content itself is identical.

The specific placement guidance

Immediately following the relevant heading, as the very first text. No introductory sentence, no transitional phrase, no additional context before the direct answer — the answer block should be the first thing a reader (and Google's algorithm) encounters directly beneath the heading.

Before any sub-headings or further content divisions related to that same question — the calibrated answer block represents the complete, direct answer; any additional supporting content, examples, or elaboration should follow after this core block, not be interspersed within it.

At the top of the page for the primary target question, if the page has one clear, central primary question it is targeting — placing your most important answer block early in the page, rather than requiring significant scrolling to reach it, both serves genuine reader experience and maximises extraction likelihood for your primary target query.

Repeated, where genuinely relevant, for multiple distinct questions within the same page — a comprehensive page addressing several genuinely distinct questions should have a properly placed, calibrated answer block immediately following each respective question heading throughout the page, not just at the very top.

What undermines proper placement, even with good answer content

Placing the answer after several sentences of context-setting or background information. Even if the eventual answer is well-written and properly calibrated, several preceding sentences of preamble before it appears reduces the close proximity to the heading that maximises extraction confidence.

Splitting the answer across multiple paragraphs with other content interspersed. A genuinely calibrated answer block should be a single, cohesive unit immediately following its heading, not fragmented across the page with other content breaking up its continuity.

Placing the most important, primary answer block too far down a long page, requiring significant scrolling to reach — while this does not prevent extraction technically, it can affect genuine reader engagement metrics that may indirectly factor into broader page quality evaluation.

How this connects to overall page structure planning

This placement principle should inform how you structure a page from the planning stage, not just as a retrofit applied after writing — when planning a new piece of content, deciding which questions deserve dedicated, properly-placed answer blocks, and in what order, should happen as part of your initial content outline, not as an afterthought once the full draft already exists.

Frequently asked questions

For pages with one clear, dominant primary question (like an FAQ-style page), yes, placing the answer block essentially as the opening content works well; for broader pillar content with a wider scope, a brief genuine introduction may reasonably precede the page's various individual question-and-answer sections, as long as each individual question's answer block still immediately follows its own specific heading.

The underlying principle (direct answer immediately following the question) applies to both, though FAQ schema specifically requires the question and answer to be clearly, distinctly structured as a recognisable pair, which placement consistency directly supports.

Primary content flow placement is strongly preferred — Google's extraction algorithms are generally most confident about content within the main, primary content area of a page, rather than sidebar, footer, or other secondary content zones.
