Why URL structure matters for SEO
The seven URL structure rules that matter
Rule 1: Use hyphens, not underscores
Google treats hyphens as word separators "technical-seo" is read as two words "technical" and "seo." Underscores are treated as word joiners "technical_seo" is read as one word "technicalseo." Always use hyphens.
/blog/technical-seo-audit-guide/ ? /blog/technical_seo_audit_guide/ ?
Rule 2: Use lowercase letters only
URLs are case-sensitive on most servers. /Services/Web-Design/ and /services/web-design/ are technically different URLs. Using uppercase in URLs creates duplicate content risk. Use all lowercase.
Rule 3: Keep URLs short and descriptive
Shorter URLs are more clickable in search results and easier to share. Remove stop words (a, the, and, for, of) from URLs where they do not add clarity.
/blog/technical-seo-guide/ ? (4 words, 28 characters) /blog/the-complete-and-comprehensive-guide-to-technical-seo-for-businesses/ ? (too long)
Rule 4: Include the primary keyword
Your target keyword should appear in the URL it is a relevance signal and improves click-through rate from search results.
/services/technical-seo-mumbai/ keyword "technical seo mumbai" in URL ? /services/s1247/ no keyword signal ?
Rule 5: Use a logical hierarchy reflecting your site structure
Your URL structure should mirror your information architecture:
yourdomain.com/services/service category pageyourdomain.com/services/web-design/specific service pageyourdomain.com/services/web-design/mumbai/service + location page
This hierarchy communicates the relationship between pages to Google and users.
Rule 6: Avoid unnecessary subfolders
Each additional subfolder in a URL adds crawl depth the number of clicks from the homepage to reach the page. Pages deeper than 3 4 clicks from the homepage receive less crawl priority.
/blog/2026/january/technical-seo-guide/ (5 levels) ? /blog/technical-seo-guide/ (2 levels) ?
Rule 7: Maintain URL stability
Once a URL is established and has been indexed, do not change it without implementing a 301 redirect. URL changes without redirects create 404 errors, lose backlink equity, and require Google to re-index the page from scratch.

Notice: clean, descriptive, hierarchical, all lowercase, keyword-inclusive, no dates in blog URLs (dates age content and require URL changes if you update the post).
Should blog URLs include dates?
Debate exists on this. The argument for dates: signals freshness. The argument against: URLs with /2026/ become dated when the content is updated and the year changes. Our recommendation: no dates in blog URLs. Use the datePublished and dateModified schema properties to signal freshness instead.
Frequently asked questions
What if our existing URLs do not follow these rules? Do not change live URLs on a page-by-page basis without a comprehensive redirect plan. Changing URLs without 301 redirects creates 404 errors and loses link equity. Audit, plan, implement redirects, and change URLs systematically or accept that the value of URL improvement does not outweigh the disruption risk for established pages.
Does URL length affect ranking? Google does not use URL length as a direct ranking factor. However, shorter URLs are more clickable (improving CTR, an indirect ranking signal) and less likely to be truncated in search results.
Should we include our city name in every service URL? For a primarily Mumbai-focused business, including "mumbai" in service URLs (/services/web-design-mumbai/) can help local relevance. For businesses serving multiple cities, a subfolder structure (/services/web-design/mumbai/ and /services/web-design/delhi/) scales better.
